SRT: Quick Updates

September 2014

Saranac River Trail is featured at Stretch Your Summer On the Waterfront at Plattsburgh City Beach on September 6, 2014. The Saranac River Trail is now 3, so come help us celebrate. That's three trail projects completed and in the works.

Saranac River Trail (SRT)

The original Saranac River Trail runs for 1.5 miles through the City of Plattsburgh. As outlined in the feasibility study from 2006, it's a three-way partnership among the City of Plattsburgh, State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, and a citizens advisory committee. We also planned to extend the Trail both in the City and up the Saranac River, and now that's happening. The Trail has been open for business (if your business is walking, biking, blading, or sitting to watch the river) for a couple of years now. The citizens advisory committee has morphed into an official non-profit corporation chartered by the State of New York and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Meanwhile, the City, its consultants, and its engineers have been working diligently on plans for the next phase.

Saranac River Trail Phase 2 (SRT2)

The NYS Department of Transportation announced the funding of SRT2 for $1.6 million at the beginning of 2014. Engineering is under way now with construction beginning in the fall of 2015 and being completed in 2016. Citizen input is welcomed and solicited. Watch the media and/or subscribe to our news updates on for news of public meetings. When completed, SRT will run for about three miles from George Angell Drive (behind the high school), across the campus, along Pine Street, and across the Saranac Street Bridge to a new pedestrian/bicycling bridge to the foot of Durkee Street and downtown Plattsburgh. A spur off Pine Street will provide a safe connection to Stafford Middle School.

Saranac River Trail Greenway (SRTG)

Meanwhile, plans are underway to extent the Saranac River Trail into the Town of Plattsburgh and further up the Saranac River. Planning has been funded through New York State.
