Jane's Walk 2019: 10 AM at City Hall
Join Friends of Saranac River Trail for its second annual Jane’s Walk, exploring and celebrating the sometimes-overlooked urban gems of downtown Plattsburgh, on Saturday, May 4, at 10 a.m., in front of City Hall. There is no charge.
This year’s Jane’s Walk, part of a nationwide event celebrating the life and ideas of the writer Jane Jacobs, provides the public an opportunity, free of charge, to see and appreciate the current vitality and fascinating history of downtown. During the 90-minute walk, guides will have you looking closely at places we all pass every day without a second thought, from arts projects to food and retail outlets to the Saranac River itself.
The walk is part of Friends of Saranac River Trail’s ongoing Talks, Treks and Tasks project. Talks, Treks and Tasks is partially underwritten the Lake Champlain Basin Program, which provided a grant for programming to focus on the portions of the upcoming Phase 2 of the Saranac River Trail. When completed, SRT Phase 2 will have two new pedestrian bridges linking Durkee Street, Saranac Street and Pine Street, allowing easy access back and forth across the river.
Among the stops on this year’s Jane’s Walk: Wayward Sound Studio, a converted die-cast metal parts factory and now a state-of-the-art recording facility; Dress Code, a consignment shop that has capitalized on the vintage-clothing revolution to offer some of the most fashion-forward shopping in the region; the venerable Campus Corner restaurant, serving hearty fare since 1950, when there really was a campus nearby; the ever-expanding North Country Food Co-op; an art & sculpture studio along with a sculpture garden; and Clark’s Landing with what is thought to be the oldest standing industrial building in Plattsburgh.
