New Project for 2017: Plattsburgh Power: History and Action for the Future
This project will raise awareness and appreciation for local energy infrastructure and its extraordinary history among residents of the City of Plattsburgh. The project will use students from SUNY Plattsburgh who will receive one credit of college credit for their effort as they receive professional trainings and develop important skills to assist residents to reduce energy consumption and costs Innovative communication techniques such as using large public displays (possibly including City Hall lighting) and social media to alert people to specific conservation needs will be explored.

The Utility Smart app (developed by Curt Gervich and Jesse Feiler) will be enhanced to incorporate this research and the action items that are created through it. We will create a program of study that provides students with an inside view on energy infrastructure, governance and planning in the city of Plattsburgh and New York State. Students will work with the team leaders to research and prepare presentations for community groups such as peer students, Kiwanis, Rotary, religious fellowships, senior citizen groups, and others. Presentations will address the unique and storied history of Plattsburgh’s energy infrastructure, which has achieved mythic status among residents, as well as the commercial, transportation and industrial innovations that have helped to form the City. They will also present ways residents can reduce energy consumption and bills in this unique energy environment.
